The Complete Guide to Get a NY Motorcycle License

While most people on the road are four-wheel drivers, two-wheel drivers are still popular. Whether you want to be a four-wheel or two-wheel driver, you will be required to go through a series of practice and training processes before you are legally qualified to drive. The process of getting a driver’s license for a motorcycle is quite similar, yet different from a driver’s license for a car vehicle. To help you prepare for your NY motorcycle license, we have prepared a brief, yet detailed overview of the process. Get started and prepare for your very first motorcycle license!

Part I: Get Your Learner’s Permit

Like any driver’s license in NY, your first step is to prepare for the motorcycle learner’s permit. Make sure to complete the following steps to help you register for your motorcycle learner’s permit.

  • Study for the learner’s permit test.

You will be required to take a written test quizzing your knowledge of general traffic rules and motorcycles. Use the motorcycle manual provided by the NY DMV office to help you study for the written test.

Keep in mind that the test will be available in two forms: online or in-person. We will go over them later.

  • Prepare your Documents

When you are ready to take your written test, schedule a time to get your learner’s permit. To complete the application for your learner’s permit, you will be asked to provide proof of your identity, age, and residence. If you are applying for a specific type of license, you should determine which kind of license (Standard, Real, Enhanced) you want to get.

  • Apply for Learner’s Permit

The learner’s permit application process includes the written test, vision test, and application step

As mentioned earlier, you are allowed to take your written test online or in person.

  • If you are planning to take your test online, you will be required to take a visit to the DMV office after you have passed your test to pay your fees and confirm your original documents. To pass the test, you will be required to answer at least 80% of the questions correctly, 50% of the questions relating to road signs, and 60% of the motorcycle questions. If you did not do well the first time, no worries. You will have the chance to retake the test and resubmit your application for a second time after at least 6 hours.
  • If you are planning to take the test in person, you can schedule an appointment and complete the test at the DMV office. To pass the test, you must answer 14 out of 20 questions correctly, including at least two of the four road sign questions. You will be allowed to retake your test free of charge the second time. However, additional fees may be required for additional tests in the future.

After you pass your test, you will be required to take a vision test and pay your fees. Once the necessary forms and procedures are completed, you will receive a temporary motorcycle learner’s permit. The official permit will take around two weeks to deliver by mail.

Part II: Get Your Motorcycle License

Now that you have received your learner’s permit, you are ready for the next stage: the road test. The road test is essential to ensure that you have the right knowledge to operate a motorcycle and drive safely in real traffic. Read on to find out how you can prepare for the road test to earn your motorcycle license.

  • Practice for the Road Test

To prepare for the road test, it is recommended that you have at least 30 hours of practice driving the motorcycle, including 10 hours of practice in high to medium traffic. However, if you are under 18, you will be required to hold your permit for at least 6 months before you can register for the road test. With extra practice on the road, you are training yourself to prepare for any situation and ensure a safer motorcycle ride. Regardless of how you practice for the road test, keep in mind that you must be supervised by a validly licensed motorcycle driver (21 or older) from any state. The supervised driver should always be within ¼ miles of you to help your safety. You are also required to always obey the learner’s permit restrictions and drive safely.

  • Take your Road Test

When you are ready to take the road test, schedule an appointment to take the road test. As you prepare for the road test, make sure to have your materials, including a motorcycle you can use as the test vehicle and other necessary documents (ID, learner’s permit, Pre-licensing course certification, etc.) ready for your road test and license application.

  • Start your Motorcycle journey!

After you pass the test, you will be required to fill out some application forms and pay your fees so the DMV can help you register for your license. A temporary license without a photo will be available to you while the official one will take around two weeks to deliver by mail.

If you did not pass your road test, do not worry. You only need to wait at least one day later to take your test again. However, if you still failed the second test, you will be required to pay additional fees for future tests.

Once you passed the test, you are ready to get your very first motorcycle if you do not already own one. With an official NY motorcycle license, you are ready to start your motorcycle journey!
